Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time, appeared on the Today show on Monday to promote the magazine's annual Person of the Year issue. Matt Lauer seemed to annoy Stengel by implying the pick was obvious and foreordained. Stengel demurred and earnestly replied that it was a competitive year; his shortlist included Sarah Palin, Henry Paulson, Michael Phelps, and the guy who directed the Beijing Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies.Time announced today that its surprise pick is...Barack Obama. Yawn.
